I admit, I haven't built a cool elevator. Or seemingly pointless tunnels under a stormy Age. Or a rotating fortress that doesn't seem like it would stop angry pirates.
When I was talking about his excuses, I meant more like "The book burned." Or "There's a storm on Rime." I don't think the book really burned in Exile. I think Atrus and Catherine took it easy while they sent their friend on the dangerous mission to follow the madman. Same with Rev. Atrus knew there was trouble, so he stayed on Rime and waited for the trouble to get cleaned up.

Heh. I was having a really difficult time posting that. I must have tried about six times before it worked. But apparently several of those attempts finally worked. I'll have to clean up.
